In Baker and a bunch of his friends designed the first rainbow flag, urged on by Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the history of California. Each color had its own meaning—hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit. Thirty volunteers helped make the first two flags in the attic of the Gay Community Center in San Francisco.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots — a series of demonstrations carried out by a group of drag queens in in response to the police raid of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York. The movement took off — today festivals and parades take place all around the world.
I'll never forget the day my something-year-old grandmother grabbed a rainbow belt from the shelf at Spencer's, wrapped it around her waist, and shimmied her hips down the aisle. The image is hilarious enough on its own, but it's accompanied by the sheer mortification of my mom, who grabbed the belt out of her hands while cracking up. Because as everyone knows except my grandmother, apparentlyswathing your body in rainbows means that you're definitely not-straight.
It was within this context that the Stonewall uprising, whose 50th anniversary has drawn millions of visitors to New York this month, unfolded in June of After years of enduring police raids on gay bars, where men and women faced arrest for simply dancing with members of their own sex, the patrons of the Stonewall Inn were suddenly moved to retaliate. What transpired from that galvanizing moment and over the course of the next half-century was a movement to upend the prejudices and misapprehensions that had taken such deep root in the national psyche.
Other older uses of rainbow flags include a symbol of peace. While this use of the rainbow flag originated in San Franciscoit is now used worldwide. Originally devised by artist Gilbert Bakerthe design has undergone several revisions since its debut infirst to remove colors then restore them based on availability of fabrics.
